About the Event

Turn fabric scraps & thread into a beautiful, one-of-a-kind scarf in this full day workshop. Alison will advise you about colour choices & help arrange the best fabrics to combine together. You’ll be shown how to layer & stitch them using straight & zig-zag stitches on the sewing machine, but if you’re comfortable with free machine embroidering, then you are very welcome to add that to your scarf. The ends of your scarf can be finished with a row of tassels made of fabric strips, yarn & thread.

Alison will show you what else you can do with this technique of creating your own fabric, including painting & dying into the cloth.

All equipment, fabrics & threads will be provided in this workshop, but you’re welcome to bring some special scraps that you’d like to work with.

Experience of using a sewing machine is required for this workshop.

A lunch-hour break will be taken during this workshop between 1pm & 2pm. We encourage attendees to take a wonder to a local cafe or have a browse in the nearby charity shops. Really because we want to know what treasure you’ve found there.

Alison McDonagh is a full time textile artist, working from the Sussex countryside & surrounded by sheep, home grown vegetables & the wildlife of the Downs. Her creative career has spanned art & music teaching, fashion knitwear in the 80s (we want to know more, please!) & her own style of textiles creation which is applied to all kinds of homeware & accessories. Alison has always used upcycled fabrics in her work as she wants to benefit charity shops and reduce landfill.
