About the Event

Learn to sew a top with this wonderful pattern by Marillia Walker. This is the Autumn/Winter version of this class, which features 3/4 length sleeves with elastic cuffs, great for layering under cardigans. The top has a wide neckline facing & is available in adult sizes up to 60” bust. This class makes a great accompaniment to our Beginners Sewing: Pyjama Trousers.

The techniques you’ll be taught by Vicki in this class include cutting out pattern pieces, using notches, sewing a facing, understitching, hemming & pressing.

Fabric choices are included in the class but you can of course bring your own fabric too. Depending on the width of the fabric & size sewn, you’ll need between 1.8m - 2.3m of 112cm fabric or 1.2m - 1.9m of 140cm wide fabric. The top can be sewn in a wide variety of fabrics. We recommend beginners use stable woven cottons, but more experienced sewists can use drapey viscose or stretchy knits. You’ll sew on our Janome sewing machines & use all our equipment like scissors & pins.

This class is suitable for beginners who have also completed our other beginner classes including making pyjama trousers. Or for anyone with intermediate experience, having made a few garments before. It is not suitable for absolute beginners.

You’ll use a copy of the pattern in the class & get a PDF version sent to you after the class so you can make it again at home. The full pattern includes many more options - dress length, button front, curved hems & a pocket. We have kindly been given permission by Marilla Walker to use this pattern for teaching.

Vicki Halliday is the co-owner of The Good Stitch. Before she opened the shop, she worked in theatre & higher education, as a Costume Supervisor, Wardrobe Manager & Costume Maker. Vicki loves sharing the joy of sewing & creating with textiles. She is a patient teacher who believes in the power of self-learning, guiding her students to find that Aha moment & to reach their sewing goals.

Marilla Walker has closed her pattern shop & we are grateful to be able to use the Maya top for teaching this class. Her patterns all feature interesting details & straightforward sewing techniques that are great for learning, plus lots of options for hacking garments to your own tastes. You might get lucky & find a paper copy of one of her patterns still out there.
