About the Event
Learn the principles of making a garment with simple shapes, marking & cutting the fabric according to a lay plan instead of paper pattern pieces. Low-waste & zero-waste patterns aim to use as much of the fabric as possible & using rectangular pattern pieces makes this possible. This unisex kimono is sewn with French seams for a beautiful finish on the inside. It includes pockets, a belt & belt loops as well as traditional details such as the standing neckband all around the front. We have 2 sizes to fit up to 70” hip/bust/chest for women & men.
This class runs over 2 sessions, a total of 5 hours. In the first session, you’ll cut your pieces & begin sewing them together. There are some things you can continue with at home if you want to, and then return for the second session to finish up your kimono. The class is running over two Wednesday evenings with a 2 week gap between them.
You’ll need to provide your fabric or buy from us with a special 20% discount for the class. We have devised cutting layouts for many widths of fabric, so you can choose anything you want to sew up into your kimono, although cotton, linen & similar woven fabrics are the simplest to work with. But if you want to use a special piece of silk satin, then we’re here for that too. The length of fabric you’ll need will depend on the width of the fabric & the size that you want to sew. It’s possible to sew the kimono with only 2m of 140cm wide fabric, so adjust accordingly.
Apart from fabric, you don’t need to provide anything else for the class. You’ll sew on our Janome sewing machines & use all our equipment like scissors & pins. This class is ideal for anyone who has sewn a garment or two & is curious about other approaches to dressmaking.
