About the Event

This traditional form of hand-quilting is made with torn strips of scrap fabrics, arranged & stitched from the edge to the middle of the work, so that when the last piece of fabric is stitched in, it is finished. Liz will show you all the techniques to make the Kawandi quilt, using fabric scraps, waste cotton batting & upcycling vintage linens for the backing. Liz will guide you to select a colour palette & create your own Christmas themed table runner.

Kawandi quilting has a long history hailing from the Siddi people of African descent now living in India & quilts are made with waste fabrics & used as mattresses & blankets. Liz will share some of the history & meaning of the different elements of the quilts that she has been learning about.

All materials & equipment are provided for this workshop. We advocate for using up scraps & upcycling materials into new things & there will be lots of scrap to choose from. We have a box of scrap fabrics in Christmas colours, but feel free to bring your own too.

No experience of quilting or hand stitching is required, the techniques are quick to pick up. If you are a fan of the quiet mindfulness of Sashiko, or similar embroidery styles, then this technique is something you will, almost certainly, enjoy.

Liz Smith is fascinated with the creative power in pulling thread on a needle. Convinced that making something for yourself is a skill & a thrill for everyone to enjoy, she has made a career out of sharing her skills. Liz works as a textile artist, freelance costume maker & runs a variety of workshops. She uses her fabric remnants to make & sell unique textile pieces, raising money for charitable causes at garden events where the cake is as important as the makes.
