Introduction to Sashiko Embroidery

Sashiko is the Japanese form of embroidery used to strengthen & repair worn textiles. It translates as ‘little stab’ and is a meditative way to engage your hands & mind.

In this two and a half hour workshop, you will learn about the history & significance of the different sashiko embroidery patterns while creating them with needle & thread in linen fabric.

Liz will demonstrate how to make the running stitch that forms the basis of sashiko, as well as lots of tips & tricks to make your gorgeous embroidery. You don’t need any experience of embroidery or hand stitching. Choose a pattern or two to stitch & you’ll be shown how to transfer it onto your fabric. If you wish, you can make a lavender bag from your sashiko piece, for which lavender will be provided. Or continue exploring further patterns to take home, perhaps to stitch into a patchwork later.

You will receive your own thread & needles to take home with you so you can continue to explore this mindful style of embroidery. A selection of reclaimed linen fabrics will be available to choose from.

No previous experience is needed & all equipment & materials will be provided.

Liz works as a textile artist, freelance costume maker & runs a variety of workshops. She uses her fabric remnants to make & sell unique textile pieces, raising money for charitable causes at garden events where the cake is as important as the makes.
